Earth Om – Sacred Resonance
Exploring Your Relationship with The Earth
A personal note from Byron . . .
As we face the truth about our global crisis and the devastating impact of climate change, it is clear that we, as human inhabitants of this planet, now find ourselves at a critical point where our survival depends on our ability and willingness to develop a healthy, balanced and sustainable relationship with the Earth – the Mother of Us All.
Although some are still debating about how much of our global climate change is directly caused by human behavior, it is indisputable that human beings are responsible for polluting the air, freshwater creeks and rivers, the seas and oceans, and lands. We are responsible of the rampant deforestation and destruction of natural habitats and ecosystems, the overuse and exploitation of the Earth’s limited natural resources and the resulting mass extinction of flora and fauna. It isn’t necessary for me to describe all of the gritty details related to the disastrous consequences of the activities noted above. I believe that if you are curious about the Earth Om – Sacred Resonance exercise and are reading this, you probably are already painfully aware of the crisis we are facing and are doing something positive to help heal and transform the ways in which we treat ourselves and Mother Earth.
In my view, the best way to address these challenges is to utilize an animistic-relationship perspective. This view assumes that all natural objects, natural phenomena and the universe itself are alive – everything is composed of life-force and spirit. Cross-culturally, all indigenous societies operate from this perspective. This is also consistent with the Gaia theory that proposes that all organisms and inorganic material on Earth, including the biosphere, atmosphere and so on, are integrated into a complex, self-regulated system that maintains the conditions for life on Earth. And while as a whole, I do not romanticize Native/indigenous societies, they do appear to possess an ability to live in harmony and balance with their environment in a sustainable manner – something that industrialized nations have not been willing to do. I believe that this is fundamentally due to the fact that we see ourselves as separate from Mother Earth and therefore we tend to devalue Her, making it easy to exploit and abuse Her resources.
Healthy, mature relationships require that we value the other as much as ourselves, and even more in some cases, as evidenced by some mother/child relationships where conscious, personal sacrifice for the child is sometimes necessary. Healthy, mature relationships also require that we develop our innate capacities for authentic power, purpose and presence, and the ability to manifest and employ these qualities as needed in any given situation or circumstance. This is true for all relationships: human and non-human. The overriding position here is that we must work to develop a mature, sustainable, and consciously interdependent relationship with Mother Earth. I am convinced that using methods and practices that induce and support non-ordinary states of consciousness, such as meditation, shamanic journey work, breathwork, and many others, is a critically important component for doing this work successfully. We simply cannot see the deepest truths about our relationships (or anything else for that matter) from the perspective of our ego-mind, or the reasoning-mind that operates in ordinary reality. The defenses, distortions and obscurations that form our personality structures are just too formidable for us to see and realize what is true and real. The combination of shamanic rhythm & sounds, verbal guidance, chanting and Field Effect Audio Technology™ in this Earth Om – Sacred Resonance exercise provides gentle induction and powerful support for the listener to move beyond ego defenses into a heart-centered journey of self-discovery.
The intention of the Earth Om – Sacred Resonance exercise is to help you explore your relationship with the Earth in a very personal way – and to cultivate a deeper and more personal connection with the Earth. This exercise is highly experiential and interactive, and will provide you with an opportunity to closely examine the unique qualities, characteristics, beliefs and other dynamics that form your relationship with the Earth and all that this relationship means to you.
Mother Earth is calling on all of us now – individually and collectively – to do our part.
Suggestions for Using the ExercisePlease review the information on Field Effect Audio Technology™
before doing the exercise.
1) Set aside 90-120 minutes. Create "Sacred Space" as described in The Shaman’s Heart Program user’s manual. Listen to the entire exercise (track 1) with quality headphones, preferably in a darkened room.
After the conclusion of the exercise (track 1), as soon as possible, spend some time in nature; go for a walk or a short hike, sit or lie on the ground/grass, perhaps stand or sit with your back against a tree on large rock – whatever feels right for you and is fairly convenient.
Immediately after your time in nature, come back to your listening area and proceed to track 2 (the Earth Om – Sacred Resonance music track without my verbal guidance) and do the exercise again. Stay present with your experience and really allow yourself to chant along with the audio track, being aware of the resonance factor that is happening within you and around you. Notice if there are any differences in your experience from your initial exercise. After the conclusion of track 2, spend some time reflecting on the exercise – journal or document your experience so you can review it later.
2) If you are going to be spending time in nature (hiking, camping, vacationing, etc), do the exercise (track 1) at some point within 48 hours before you leave. When you return, within 48 hours, do the exercise without verbal guidance (track 2). Document your experience(s) as suggested above.
